MATUTO

Imagine the sound of a Brazilian Carnival in the Appalachian Mountains while lying on the luscious grass of the beautiful Scheuermann Farm in Pine Island. MATUTO (“bumpkin” in Brazilian slang) moves with two-stepping grace between bluegrass and forro, between swamp rock and maracatu, between surf guitar shimmies and the wah-wah of the berimbau.

WARWICK DANCES a film by Linda Mensch

As part of the evening, Linda Mensch, Warwick choreographer and Artistic Director of the Moving Company Modern Dance Center, is premiering her short film, Warwick Dances. Inspired by one too many conversations with friends that have said, “I don’t dance” or, “I used to dance,” Linda began inviting friends and acquaintances to strut their stuff, if only for a few moments, on film. The result is funny, touching and will make you want to join in.

ZONGO JUNCTION

Zongo Junction, an incredible 12 piece band that will bring audiences to their feet. The group blends West African rhythms with funk, jazz and soul. True to their inspiration, Nigerian superstar, political activist and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the outfit excites dance floors wherever they perform The band has toured extensively throughout the East and West coasts. As Afrobeat music has always done, the album speaks truth-to-power with humor and soul. Members of the band have performed or recorded with: TV on the Radio, Easy-Star All-Stars, The Walkmen, and many more.

ISIS MOVEMENT COMPANY

Isis Movement Company, a Festival favorite, is creating a new performance work as part of Saturday nights events. The company, founded in 2009 and based in Brooklyn, NY, is co-directed by Marcela Alvarez and Melissa Padham. Since their 2009 debut at the Warwick Arts Festival, Isis Movement Co. has performed at various venues including The Winter Garden of the World Financial Center, Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn and Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn.

ILUSHA TSINADZE’S DEDA ENA

Influenced by Ilusha's native Georgia (the country, not the state), the ancient folk traditions blend with contemporary beats. The music brings mountain songs and village dances into conversation with the global city, featuring blazing fiddle solos, African and Brazilian percussion and soulful singing. “Tsinadze walks the tightrope between Georgian tradition and American influence, in particular the bedrock sounds of jazz and folk — creating something that's both musically intriguing and culturally unprecedented ... a rousing celebration of sounds both strange and familiar, a soulful merging of far-flung cultures that only music can accomplish.” -Beacon Press, May 2011 Mr. Tsinadze is as well known in his native Georgia as he is in the clubs of New York City, a popular performer in both cultures, a perfectly representing the dialogue between urban and folk cultures.
